My Honolulu Favorites: What I’ve Done, Loved & Recommend

I was recently asked for recommendations for someone visiting Hawaii for the first time, so I figured I’d put together a list, not just for her, but for anyone planning a trip. These are all things I’ve personally done, visited, or eaten, so hopefully I know what I’m talking about. I could go on forever, but I’ll keep it short because even this can feel overwhelming. I’ll start with this list, and as I remember more things, I’ll keep adding to it. LOL! 😊

Here’s a list of some of my favorite things to do, see, and eat, in no particular order.

1.) Koko Head Hike

I don’t think there’s ever been a trip where I didn’t do this hike. From Waikiki, it’s about a 25-minute drive (with no traffic). I highly recommend going early in the morning. I’ve done it midday and it’s way too hot. Bring water so you don’t dehydrate. There’s also free parking!

2.) Pearl Harbor

You can’t visit Honolulu and skip Pearl Harbor. Tickets can be purchased online, and Groupon is sometimes a good option too!

3.) Waikiki + Trolley Ride

I love being around people, so I don’t mind the crowds. Walking around Waikiki, whether you’re window shopping or actually shopping, is a must. There are stores for every budget. Hop on the trolley too! The last time I went, we rode it multiple times and only paid once (I think it was the pink line). It’s honestly just fun to sit back, ride around, and people-watch. LOL!

4.) Waimea Falls

This is more of a scenic walk than a hike, and it leads to a beautiful waterfall where you can actually get in the water. You’ll need tickets, but it’s definitely worth it!

5.) China Man’s Hat + North Shore + Shrimp Trucks + Dole Plantation

Plan a full day to drive around the island (or at least part of it). Head east and stop at scenic spots along the way. Make sure to stop at China Man’s Hat, explore the North Shore, and grab lunch at a shrimp truck. After browsing the shops, head to the Dole Plantation. While you’re there, you might as well do the maze and train ride and don’t forget to get Dole Whip!

6.) Diamond Head Hike

Not a bad hike at all, even kids do it. Just make sure to do a little research beforehand. The last time I went, we had to reserve tickets online. Parking can be a bit chaotic, but it’s fairly organized. You do have to pay for parking!

7.) Bishop Museum

If you want a break from outdoor activities, this is an amazing place to learn about the history of the Hawaiian Islands!

8.) Ala Moana Beach Park + Fireworks

Take a walk through the park, especially on a Friday evening. Watch the sunset and stay for the free fireworks show. Fun fact (or maybe not so fun): the fireworks are put on by the Hilton Hawaiian Village and cost around $30,000–$50,000 per show. It does get crowded, since it’s not just tourists who come out here but locals as well, but the best view is still from the park!

9.) Breakfast at the Royal Hawaiian

Get the pink pancakes!!! Yes, it’s a bit pricey (it’s a resort, after all), but for the pancakes and the view, I don’t mind. Funny story, I used to order from the kids’ menu, but as of January 2026, they don’t allow adults to anymore 😂 It’s fine…I just never finish my food. LOL! Shoutout to the sweet waiter who tried to help me out!

10.) Catamaran Ride

Just off Waikiki, this is such a fun experience. I took motion sickness medicine beforehand and felt great at first but about an hour in, I started to feel sick. So if you get motion sickness easily, definitely prepare but still do it! Seeing the island from the water is beautiful!

11.) Skydiving at the North Shore

If you’ve ever wanted to go skydiving, this is the place to do it. The views are gorgeous! I did this almost 10 years ago and I’m so glad I waited to do it in Hawaii instead of Kansas. It was actually cheaper at the time too!

12.) Snorkeling in Waikiki

This was incredible, so many beautiful fish. Definitely a must-do! That said…I did get seasick from the boat ride again 😂 so just keep that in mind!

13.) Honolulu Coffee Company

For coffee lovers, definitely check this place out. It’s a great local coffee shop with solid coffee and a nice island feel, perfect for a quick stop or a relaxed break while you’re out exploring!

14.) Tantalus Lookout

Drive up here for an amazing view. Simple, quick, and worth it!

15.) McDonald’s Breakfast (Hawaii Style)

You can’t go to Hawaii and not try the local McDonald’s breakfast, rice, spam, and eggs. It just hits different there!

16.) Byodo-In Temple

This is a replica of a traditional Japanese temple and it’s absolutely beautiful. You can buy tickets when you arrive. And right across the street is what’s "known" as one of the prettiest McDonald’s so grab that breakfast after! You seriously can’t miss it!

17.) Ala Moana Mall

Considered the largest open-air mall, this is another great spot to walk around, shop, and eat. It’s super easy to spend a few hours here just exploring all the stores and food options!

18.) Jollibee

If you’re up for trying something different, why not try Jollibee? It’s a Filipino chain known for its sweet spaghetti and fried chicken. There are a few locations around the island, including one inside Ala Moana Mall!

19.) Beach Day in Kailua

If you want a beach day outside of Waikiki, head to Kailua. The water is insanely clear and calm, and the sand is super soft. It’s more of a chill, local vibe compared to Waikiki. Perfect for just laying out, swimming, and slowing down for a day!

20.) Dave’s Ice Cream

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, grab ice cream from Dave’s Ice Cream. There’s one located at the Ilikai Hotel, and there’s also a spot in Waikiki. Perfect for a treat after a long beach day or walking around the area!

That’s it for now. Just a few of my favorites! Like I said, I’ll keep adding more as I remember things because there’s honestly so much to do in Honolulu. If you end up trying any of these or have your own favorites, let me know! I’m always looking for new spots to check out! 🌺
